Thick, discolored, or damaged toenails are extremely common, and for many people, they affect more than just appearance. They impact confidence, comfort, and even daily routines.

The important thing to understand is this: this is not just a cosmetic issue, and it’s not something you have to live with.

What Causes Thick or Damaged Toenails?

Toenails don’t change without a reason. When you notice thickening, discoloration, or brittleness, there is usually an underlying condition that needs proper treatment.

The most common causes include:

• Fungal infections (onychomycosis)
This is the leading cause. Many people assume sore feet are simply the cost of standing, walking, or working long hours.

But pain is often a sign that your feet are not getting the support they need.

Your feet are the foundation of your entire body. When they are not properly aligned, every step can create extra stress on your muscles, joints, and spine. Over time, this can lead to persistent pain and fatigue that makes everyday activities harder.

The good news is there is a solution designed specifically for your feet.

The Real Problem Behind Foot Pain

Most foot pain isn’t just about the foot itself. It often begins with how your foot moves when you walk.

When your foot rolls inward too much, lacks proper arch support, or doesn’t distribute weight evenly, it can lead to:

Heel pain and plantar fasciitis

Knee and hip discomfort

Lower back strain

Leg fatigue after standing or walking

Ongoing pressure on sensitive areas of the foot

Generic shoe inserts rarely solve the problem because they are not designed for your unique foot structure.

That’s where custom orthotics make a difference.

A Personalized Solution Designed for Your Feet

At Trinity Foot Center, we design custom orthotics that are tailored specifically for your feet and how you walk.

Custom orthotics are medical-grade shoe inserts created using a digital scan of your feet. Unlike store-bought insoles, they are built to correct abnormal foot motion and provide support exactly where your body needs it.

Each orthotic is created through a precise process that includes:

A detailed foot and posture evaluation

A digital scan or impression of your feet

An analysis of your walking pattern

This allows us to design orthotics that help restore proper alignment and reduce stress on your feet and joints.

How Custom Orthotics Help You Move Comfortably Again

Custom orthotics work by correcting how your foot functions during movement.

They help by:

Supporting the arch and stabilizing the heel

Reducing pressure on painful areas

Improving overall alignment of the feet and legs

Absorbing shock with every step

Providing better stability during walking and standing

By improving the way your feet move, orthotics can relieve strain not only in your feet but throughout your entire body.

Who Benefits Most from Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are commonly recommended for people experiencing:

Heel pain or plantar fasciitis

Flat feet or high arches

Achilles tendon discomfort

Bunions or hammertoes

Knee, hip, or lower back pain

Arthritis in the feet or ankles

Diabetic foot concerns

They are also helpful for individuals who spend long hours standing at work, as well as athletes who want to prevent injury and improve performance.

What to Expect at Your Orthotics Appointment

Your visit begins with a comprehensive foot evaluation. During this appointment, we assess how your feet move and how your posture affects your alignment.

Using advanced scanning technology, we capture a precise digital image of your feet. This scan allows us to create orthotics that fit comfortably inside your shoes while providing the support your body needs.

Once your orthotics are ready, we ensure they fit properly and explain how to gradually begin wearing them. Most patients adjust quickly and start noticing improvements in comfort within the first few weeks.

Imagine Walking Without Pain Again

When your feet are properly supported, everything above them works better.

Custom orthotics can help you:

Walk and stand more comfortably

Reduce daily foot fatigue

Improve posture and balance

Prevent further injury

Stay active and mobile

Instead of adapting your life around foot pain, orthotics help restore the support your body was designed to have.

Ready to Take the Next Step Toward Relief?

If foot pain or fatigue is slowing you down, custom orthotics may be the solution your body has been asking for.

The team at Trinity Foot Center is here to help you find the support your feet need to move comfortably again.

Call 972-293-9650

Text 972-764-8870

Lisa J. It's true, and the risk increases even more as you age. About 1 in 2 over age 80 will fall, too.

If you're lucky, your fall will come with only relatively minor consequences. Perhaps the worst you'll suffer is a bruised hip, or maybe a bruised ego.

But about one fifth of falls do cause serious bodily harm, such as broken bones or a concussion. This leads to around 10,000 deaths per year, as a direct or indirect consequence of falling.

Furthermore, the weeks or months you spend recovering and rehabilitating from your injury could lead to permanent declines in physical fitness, range of motion, and mobility which can limit your ability to enjoy your favorite activities or maintain your independence.

And even if the body heals, the psychological scars can remain. Foot pain is absolutely one of the leading contributing factors to falling, and should be addressed promptly and effectively.

As foot and ankle experts, we can provide a thorough fall risk assessment of your feet, ankles, and gait mechanics. Then, we can prescribe whatever treatments you need to relieve that pain and restore flexibility, mobility, and balance to your lower limbs. Whether the best answer for your situation is custom orthotics, special shoes, physical therapy, bracing, or surgery, we'll make sure you get the excellent foot care you need.

For other intrinsic risk factors such as vision problems, hearing loss, or chronic disease, please consult your primary care physician or an appropriate specialist. They are going to be key members of your fall prevention team.

Finally, look over the list of extrinsic risk factors again and determine if there are any simple modifications you or a family member could make to your living environment to make it safer for you. You may also consider asking your primary care physician for a referral to an occupational therapist, who can provide an in-home risk assessment and make recommendations and suggestions.

Remember, it may only take one fall to cause permanent damage. So make sure the next fall never happens!

To schedule your appointment with Dr. Brandy at Trinity Foot Center, please call our office today at (972) 293-9650. These conditions make it ripe for heel spurs, too.

There is also a lot of standing around in baseball, then in an instant, a player is in full sprint mode. These sudden stop-and-goes heighten the risk of Achilles tendonitis.

Players can diminish their chances of injury by scanning the field for hazards prior to playing, doing gentle stretching and/or light jogging before taking the field, and wearing protective equipment such as foot/ankle guards to fend off foul balls while batting. Proper technique is also a factor in reducing baseball injuries (e.g., sliding).

Wearing good shoes is key, too. Molded cleats are an excellent choice, but they should be worn a few times prior to playing to gain a feel for them. Kids should never wear hand-me-downs. Baseball shoes should be fitted by a footwear specialist., with the wearer donning the type of socks they'll be playing in. The Achilles tendon gets the spotlight in the foot/ankle area, but the peroneal tendons sometimes stir the pot, especially in athletes and dancers.

Each foot has two peroneal tendons. They run next to each other behind the outer ankle bone, then part company. One attaches to the outer part of the midfoot; the other makes a beeline to the inside of the arch.

The peroneal tendons stabilize the foot and ankle and are key components in preventing ankle sprains during activities with a lot of repetitive ankle motion. They also contribute power when pushing off.

Peroneal tendons can be irritated or injured in several ways:

Repetitive use, overuse, and trauma (e.g., ankle sprain) may cause inflammation (tendonitis), pain, and swelling to one or both tendons.

An acute tear in a tendon occurs suddenly via trauma or repetitive activity. A degenerative tear is due to overuse over a long period of time. The tendon gets overstretched, thins out, frays, and eventually tears. Tears are, unsurprisingly, painful and frequently cause swelling, weakness, and overall instability. High arches are an added risk factor for degenerative tears.

Subluxation means that the tendons have slipped from their normal position. Trauma can do it; sometimes an inherited condition is responsible. A person may feel a snapping sensation around the ankle bone, intermittent pain behind the outside ankle bone, or weakness or instability in the ankle.

Following an exam and proper diagnosis at our office, conservative treatment measures are highly successful for inflammation. Subluxations may be managed conservatively, but many eventually require surgery. Tears often require surgery, with factors such as age, activity level, and overall health playing a role.

A Chip Off the Old ... Direct force, sharp twists and turns, and sudden acceleration and stops can trigger an avulsion fracture. The attached ligament or tendon may be damaged as well.

In the lower extremities, avulsion fractures commonly strike the ankle, heel, and fifth metatarsal bone in the foot. Those who play sports and dancers are most at risk, with kids being even more susceptible due to growth spurts, as some bone is not fully hardened.

Symptoms include an initial popping sensation, pain, swelling, bruising, and increased pain with movement — often mimicking other conditions (e.g., ankle sprain). Delay in attaining an accurate diagnosis can lead to nerve irritation and chronic pain.

An avulsion fracture is generally diagnosed with an exam and X-ray. If the bone chip is too small for an X-ray to detect, a different imaging test may be called on. Avulsion fractures can frequently be treated conservatively with rest and ice packs. Others may require a boot or cast for immobilization, or crutches to keep weight off the affected area.

If the bone that chipped off is too far from the main bone to heal with conservative measures, surgery may be necessary.

Avulsion fractures take anywhere from a few weeks to six months to heal. It depends on the location and severity of the fracture, the type of treatment, and age and overall health of the patient.

If you experience nagging foot or ankle discomfort, your body is trying to tell you something. Prior studies have shown that the human–pet bond has positive health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and reducing stress levels. The 2022 study is the first to explore its effects on cognitive health.

The 1,369 study participants averaged 65 years of age at the start of the study and possessed normal cognitive function. Approximately 725 participants had pets, with roughly 440 of them having been long-term pet owners. Dogs and cats dominated the pet landscape, but rabbits, hamsters, birds, reptiles, and fish were represented as well. The study spanned six years and included multiple types of cognitive tests.

Over that time, cognitive scores decreased at a slower rate for pet owners, especially those who owned pets for more than five years. Since chronic stress is a risk factor for impaired cognitive abilities, researchers hypothesize that pet ownership may be an effective counter, as social companionship, a sense of duty and purpose, and the physical activity required to take care of some pets can lower stress, helping to fend off cognitive decline.

Researchers point out that it would not necessarily be a good idea for an older person to rush out to purchase a pet to preserve their brain power. If they already suffer with certain chronic physical or mental-health conditions, it could be a negative — for both owner and pet.

The study had its limitations but echoed one thing most pet owners already know: Pets are something special!

This Month's Recipe

Diane's Colcannon

Servings: 8; Prep time: 20 min.; Cook time: 25 min.; Total time: 45 min.

Colcannon is a traditional Irish dish consisting of mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale. Now, the most common cause of heel pain in children is Sever's disease. But Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis or even a broken heel bone could be to blame. Want to figure out what's hurting your child and get the right relief? Dive into this post with us, to find the answers you need!
Sever's Disease Causes Heel Pain in Kids

If you have an athletic child aged 7-15 with heel pain, Sever's disease (or Calcaneal Apophysitis) is probably to blame. This is a condition that develops when children experience a rapid growth spurt.

Why is that the case? When the heel bone size increases quickly, the surrounding muscles and tendons feel the heat, often becoming overstretched and inflamed. Now, this kind of heel pain in kids is differentiated by gender. Girls are at the greatest risk for Sever's disease from seven to 13 years of age, while boys risk is greatest starting at 10 and lasting until they turn 15. Still, Sever's disease can impact children as early as age five, particularly when they are extremely active.

Signs and Symptoms

Sever's disease pain is centralized around the inside, back or outside of the heel. Typically, this kind of heel pain in kids gets worse when children are running around—sometimes, the discomfort is so severe it leaves your child limping. It usually improves during rest periods, though some discomfort may linger. And there will be sharp pain when your squeeze the child's heel bone from both sides. Sever's disease can affect both heels or just one.
Diagnosing Sever's Disease in DeSoto, TX

To diagnose Sever's disease, we'll conduct a complete review of your child's athletic activities and general medical history. In addition to a physical exam, we will take x-rays of your child's foot. This will help rule out other injuries and come to the right diagnosis.

Treating heel pain in children caused by Sever's disease?

If your child is dealing with a new case of Sever's disease, we will probably recommend taking a week off of strenuous athletic activities. During that time, we'll suggest regularly icing the affected heel. And we may suggested a short course of over-the-counter anti-inflammatories to manage inflammation and pain. If this break period resolves your child's discomfort, we'll help him or her ease back into full activity mode, but we'll make corrections to prevent reinjury. Likely changes will include finding more supportive foot gear, or adding custom orthotics for adequate injury prevention.

But what happens if, even with these precautions, the heel pain keeps returning? In this case, a custom orthotic will be critical. And some patients may need foot immobilization to allow full healing to take place. Now, that's an extreme measure, but even kids who don't need casting may benefit from wrapping their affected heel and ankle during athletic activities. Compression gear could help prevent swelling and pain. And physical therapy focused on stretching and strength building can help keep Sever's disease from returning.

Will kids outgrow Sever's disease?

Just to reiterate: you should never wait for kids to outgrow heel pain. (Or any type of foot or ankle pain, for that matter.) Now, some kids may naturally outgrow the pain of Sever's disease. But that process could take years, and dramatically impact their quality of life. Instead, by seeking early treatment, you can offer your child quick relief from the pain of this condition, allowing them to get right back to doing what they love. Of course, sometimes it can be hard to figure out the source of the problem. For that reason, it's crucial to make an immediate appointment with Dr. Lisa Brandy at the first sign of trouble. This is the best way to get an accurate diagnosis and begin the proper treatment plan, before your child's pain gets worse.

What is Achilles Tendinitis?

Achilles tendinitis describes inflammation at the point where the tendon connects to your child's heel. This is also common injury for active children, most often when they rapidly increase the duration or intensity of activities. To treat Achilles tendinitis in kids, we usually suggest ice, rest and elevation. Some children may need custom orthotics after they recover. Otherwise, the heel pain will return as soon as they jump back into their favorite activities.

Plantar Fasciitis in Kids

This cause of heel pain in kids develops when one of the long tendons running across the bottom of their feet (called the plantar fascia) gets stretched or torn. In this case, your child may complain that their heels hurt the most when they first get out of bed. And that's because, with this injury, standing up after an extended period of rest can painfully stretch out this injured tendon.

If plantar fasciitis is to blame, the treatment protocol for kids will be similar to that for Achilles tendonitis. With quick and appropriate care, we can quickly resolve this cause of children's heel pain.

Resolving Heel Pain for Kids in DeSoto

Regardless of what's causing heel pain in kids, our office is your destination for relief! Pretty soon, your walls will be cracking, your doors and windows start jamming, and mold and mildew start finding their way inside. In extreme cases, you might be looking at increasing risk of total structural failure—even if the home is only a few years old.

Now, consider this:

Your Feet are YOUR Foundation

That's right. Just like your own house, condo, or apartment building rests on a solid foundation, your entire body rests upon your own two feet. They're more than just the things you stand on all day.

If your feet hurt, you start to lose your passion for activities you used to enjoy; shopping, walking, running, basketball, etc. You might fall behind on projects at home or daily errands because it's just easier to stay on the couch. You have to decline invitations to go shopping, hiking, or attend social functions with your friends because you know you can't keep up anymore.

Just like a home foundation, if you do nothing about your foot pain, the problems will only get worse—and harder to treat in the future

A sports injury or source of chronic discomfort isn't given the time it needs to heal may get more and more painful the more you try to ignore and push through it. For example:

Stress fractures can deepen until they become traumatic breaks

Ankle sprains that don't heal properly may lead to weak and unstable joints that get injured repeatedly.

A once-mild ingrown toenail can eventually develop a nasty infection.

And of course, if pain is keeping you from staying active and getting exercise you need, it can result in a vicious cycle. You develop a more sedentary lifestyle, increasing your risk of developing countless health conditions and making it even harder to get started again.

Get Your Feet the Support They Need

In other words, the point we're trying to make is that proper foot care is an extremely important part of your overall health.

Care for your foundation by:

Wearing good shoes. Poor footwear is a major contributor to all kinds of painful conditions—everything from heel and arch pain to deformities like bunions. Shoes that are too tight, poorly made or flat-heeled are among the most common offenders.

Wearing your custom orthotics. Orthotic devices are one of the most effective tools for addressing structural deficiencies in feet. They come in many shapes and styles based on what your feet need most—shock absorption, motion control, arch support, etc.

Maintaining a healthy body weight. Things tend to be big in Texas—and, unfortunately, that includes us, too. Texas is ranked eighth in the U.S. for percentage of the adult population overweight or obese. The heavier you are, the more weight and pressure you put on feet and the quicker they break down and cause pain.

Practice good foot hygiene. Simple hygiene tasks like washing your feet daily, applying moisturizer before bed, keeping your toenails neatly trimmed, and avoiding going barefoot in public can greatly reduce your risk of developing skin and toenail conditions like athlete's foot, warts, fungal toenails, and ingrown toenails.

Seek treatment promptly if pain persists. Minor aches and pains may come and go, and can often be resolved with a little TLC at home. However, if foot pain is severe enough to interfere with daily life or lasts longer than a week, please come see us. It is more likely to linger and get worse without professional treatment.

Get the Treatment you need today!

At Trinity Foot Center, we know about keeping Texans on their feet. The fear of falling again may keep you from exercising and doing what you love—which in turn leaves you weaker, less mobile, and less healthy overall. It also may contribute to feelings of social isolation and depression.

It's a vicious cycle.

But severe falls are also very often preventable. These conditions can all alter the way you walk, and make it more difficult to climb or descend stairs, or navigate around obstacles.

There's also an indirect link between foot pain and fall risk. If your feet are always in pain, you probably aren't going to be as active. If you aren't getting enough exercise, your lower leg muscle strength, flexibility, and even balancing ability will decline faster.

As foot and ankle care experts, the Trinity Foot Center team is uniquely qualified to address these nagging foot problems. Low lying clutter such as furniture, piles of clothes or magazines, cords, etc. should be removed. Walkways should be clear.

Make sure your home is well lit. Always hit the lights before walking into a dark room. Install night lights in as necessary.

Install grab bars or handrails where necessary. Use no-slip mats in the bathroom, and secure rugs with tape, tacks, or slip-resistant backing.

Stay active. Stretch, exercise, and practice your balance as much as you are safely able. If you don't use it, you will lose it!

Talk to an occupational therapist. An OT is a medical professional who specializes in helping people maintain the highest possible quality of life, regardless of age or health status. Warts are often confused with other conditions that are visually similar, but unrelated and not caused by HPV. This means they will require different treatment approaches.

Once a wart diagnosis is confirmed, we'll recommend a treatment course.

The most common treatment is a form of cryotherapy, where we essentially "freeze" the wart off with a super-cooled liquid over the course of a few appointments. It typically takes about 90 days on average after the start of the first treatment for the wart to be fully removed and the skin returned to normal, although it could be shorter or longer depending on how many warts you have, how severe they are, and how long you've had them.

Another, more aggressive option is to simply excise the wart surgically. But while these shoes may be fashionable, they also come with substantial risks, especially for those who wear them often.

In addition to routine pain and strain, wearing high heels can lead to more serious foot conditions and complications. And the more often you wear them, the greater your chances of suffering from significant pain and even deformity later in life.

The Problem with High Heels

Your foot is naturally designed to allow you to stand and walk comfortably all day long. The arch gently flexes as weight shifts from the back to the front of the foot, spreading out the impact force over a longer period of time and over a larger surface area. This reduces the strain on the various muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints of the foot.

Now, not everyone's feet do this equally well—especially since today we're spending most of our time standing and walking on hard, flat surfaces like wood, tile, and pavement. That's why a good pair of walking shoes, and sometimes custom orthotics, are also important.

But when you put your feet in a pair of high heels, every part of your walking gait gets shifted—and not in a good way. All your weight goes to the front of your feet. The arch gets no cushioning or support. Additional strain is placed on the muscles and tendons of the lower leg.

So it's no wonder that those who wear high heels often are much more likely to develop all kinds of painful problems.

Common Complications From Wearing High Heels

Some specific foot conditions that are often linked to high heels include the following:

Bunions and Hammertoes

Wearing high heels puts incredible pressure on the front portion of your feet, including the balls of the of the feet and the toes. Furthermore, most high heels have narrowly pointed toe boxes, scrunching your toes together even more.

As a result, regularly wearing high heels can accelerate the development of bunions (bony bumps on the inside of the big toe joint) and hammertoes (toes that remain stuck in a curled position). This is especially true if bunions or hammertoes run in your family, since these conditions also often have a genetic component.

Of course, if you already have bunions or hammertoes, high heels can irritate them even more and be severely painful to wear.

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia simply means pain in the metatarsals, five long bones in each foot located in the balls of the feet. This is critically important for circulation, since blood in the feet has to work against gravity.

When you wear heels, your leg muscles remain in a constantly contracted state. Since they can't relax, this inhibits their natural ability to "pull" blood away from the feet. As a result, the blood may pool in the legs, and blood vessels may become swollen.

In addition to being a cosmetic eyesore, varicose veins can be painful and increase the risk of restless leg syndrome or ulcers.

Ingrown Toenails

If the toe box is too tight, the shoe may be putting direct pressure on your toenails. In addition, simply wearing them forces you to shift your weight forward and alter your standing and walking mechanics in ways that decrease your stability and make it more difficult to balance.

The result is that wearing high heels can significantly increase your risk of stumbling, falling, and twisting an ankle—enough to sprain or sometimes even break it. The risk is even higher if you're tired, in a crowded location, or walking on uneven surfaces.

Leg and Back Pain

Because your whole body weight is shifted forward and your biomechanics change when wearing high heels, painful problems don't just stay in your feet. Every part of your body, from legs to back to shoulders, has to adjust in order to keep your balance. And that means the pain can occur almost anywhere.

For example, regular high heel use has been linked to chronic knee pain, hip problems, hamstring and calf injuries, and back pain. All because you have to carry yourself differently when wearing heels.

Is There a "Safe" Way to Wear High Heels?

The short answer is no. Even wearing high heels one time could be what leads to an awkward stumble and ankle sprain. And you don't have to wear them very long before they start hurting.

However, for those who do want to occasionally wear their heels, we offer these guidelines.

The less you wear them, the better. Stick to special occasions. Bring a second pair of shoes along with you so that you can change out of your heels when you don't need them any longer.

The shorter the heel, the better. The higher your heel, the more unbalanced your walking gait becomes and the more strain you put on your legs and feet. Most podiatrists recommend an absolute maximum heel height of 2 inches.

The wider the heel, the better. It's much easier to balance yourself in a chunky wedge heel than a narrow stiletto.

Look for pairs with toe boxes wide and deep enough to avoid putting direct pressure on your toes or toenails.

Keep your lower leg muscles strong through regular stretching and exercise. When you wear heels, you really rely on these muscles to keep you balanced.

Be extremely cautious when wearing heels, especially in crowded public areas.

All that being said, the best thing you can do for your feet is to just not wear them at all, and stick with more supportive and comfortable shoes.

You wouldn't be alone. In fact, according to market research from the NPD Group published earlier in 2018, high heel sales were down 12 percent in 2017 versus the year before. In other words, more and more people are deciding they just aren't worth it.

Are your feet, legs, or even back aching due to high heel use? First, switch to more comfortable shoes. Unless your shoes support your feet properly, you'll face a domino effect of problems, starting with pain but possibly escalating to chronic conditions or even fractures. Want to protect your feet and keep walking comfortably? Read this post to learn how to pick the perfect shoes for any activity. But first, let's get a closer look at what happens when you decide to wear shoes that aren't supportive.

Non-Supportive Shoes: The Problem with Flats and Flip Flops

One of the most critical features of any shoe is the arch support, and that's why wearing very flat styles such as ballet slippers or flip-flops can be a major problem. Without proper arch support, something as simple as walking can put tremendous pressure on your plantar fascia. (That's the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot.) Under that pressure, it can stretch abnormally, leaving you with inflammation and terrible heel pain.

But the problems don't stop there. When you wear flip-flops, that forces your toes to grip so your shoes won't slip and slide while you walk. In turn, this forces the muscles in your legs to work over time. And that can cause muscle pain or injuries such as shin splints. Over time, this strain may even lead to physical changes in your body, leaving you with conditions such as hammertoes.

Finally, if you wear these unsupportive shoes on days when you spend too long on your feet, your injury could get more serious—you could even develop a stress fracture! How could that be possible? Well, when shoes' soles are thin, they don't offer shock absorption while you move. As a result, the full force of a long day on your feet hits their delicate bones, in some cases causing enough damage to leave you with a hairline crack.

Clearly, it's important to pick supportive shoes for your everyday activities. Yet it's even more crucial to pick proper footwear when you're engaged in more intense activities—especially when playing sports or exercising. Otherwise, you could face even more serious concerns than the ones we've already reviewed.

Supportive Athletic Footwear

When you're playing sports, your feet face far more pressure than they do on a normal day. Sudden direction changes, artificial surfaces such as turf, and sudden starts and stops dramatically increase your risk for ankle sprains, torn ligaments, and hard-to-heal injuries such as Jones fractures. For that reason, picking a generic pair of supportive shoes isn't enough to prevent sports injuries. Instead, you'll need to look for shoes specifically designed to support the moves of your chosen form of exercise.

Running

Runners need to select lighter shoes that have plenty of flexibility. At the same time, the shoes should have lots of traction on the soles, to keep you from slipping during training. Finally, look for pairs that provide additional cushioning and stability to help reduce your risk for running injuries.

Basketball

When you hit the court, you'll have to quickly change directions as you cut to the hoop then fall back on defense. Unfortunately, these quick shifts put lots of pressure on your ankles. That's why most ball players prefer high tops, for added ankle stability designed to prevent rolling injuries.

Football or Soccer

When you're playing on turf or grass, you'll need to swap supportive shoes for cleats. These shoes are designed to keep you stable on unforgiving or slippery surfaces. But, if not fitted properly, they can actually harm your feet, as their hard exterior shell can lead to black or ingrown toenails if your feet slide around and slam into the end of the shoe. Furthermore, it's important to select pairs that aren't too stiff, since they can leave you with foot and heel pain, especially if you spend lots of time wearing the cleats on the field.

While proper fitting is critical for preventing sports injuries, it's equally important for everyday foot gear. Now, if you think that's obvious, think again—in a study published in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, researchers revealed that up to 72% of people in the US wear the wrong size shoe for their feet. And that can cause a whole host of problems. But how can you tell if you're one of the majority of Americans wearing the wrong shoe size? Here are some clear signs that it's time to get those feet measured again.

Effects of Wearing Supportive Shoes That Aren't the Right Size

If you're wearing shoes with an ill-fitting toe box then your toes will give you the first cry for help. If the shoe is too tight, your toenails may change color or even detach, because of the pressure the toes experience from getting pressure along the shoe edge.

Blisters are another sign of a shoe that's too big—or too small. If you wear a size too large for your feet, they'll slide around in your shoes, causing blisters to form from the friction. At the same time, tight shoes will also rub against your feet, again leaving you with blisters.

Heel pain could also be a sign that your shoes don't fit your specific foot type—especially if you have a flat foot or high arch. If you pick a shoe that doesn't support your biomechanics, you could put pressure on your plantar fascia, and develop chronic heel pain. In some cases, choosing a shoe designed for your specific foot type can solve this problem. Other times, though, you'll need the added support of a custom orthotic to prevent pain and other complications.

Finding the Right Supportive Shoes

Now that you understand why it's so important to wear supportive shoes that fit your feet—and your activity level—it's time to learn how to get the right pair, with a little guidance from Dr. Lisa Brandy, your podiatrist in DeSoto, TX.

The first rule for finding supportive shoes is to try them on in real time, instead of shopping online. There are two big reasons for this:

Fungal toenail infections are very difficult to eradicate. The nail itself provides good protection against topical medications, while relatively poor circulation to the toes means oral medications work slowly and may require 6-12 weeks of taking pills.

The damage to the toenail doesn't just go away once the fungi are dead. You'll have to wait months—or maybe more than a year—for healthy nail to gradually replace the damaged portion.

So, if you didn't start getting serious about clearing up your unsightly toenails until the mercury started pushing 90, we had bad news for you—it'd probably be winter again by the time your toenails were fully clear.

Those who didn't want to wait for those kinds of results might have be tempted to slap an artificial nail overtop the damaged fungal nail. But that only traps moisture under the nail and makes the underlying infection worse, and much more difficult to treat.

But now, with KeryFlex, we can finally attack the medical problem AND the aesthetic problem at the same time, giving you instant visual results without impairing medical treatments that eradicate the fungus and stop it from continuing to damage your nail.

Clear Nails Right Away: KeryFlex

So what is KeryFlex?

If you want the full story, please feel free to check out this blog we wrote last year, which is packed with detailed information.

But here's the short version:

KeryFlex is an advanced nail restoration process that allows us to remodel the damaged surface of your nail, then bond an "artificial" clear nail overtop made from a flexible, breathable, medical-grade resin.

Unlike traditional artificial nails made from acrylic or other materials, a KeryFlex nail won't trap moisture underneath. It looks and feels real, and can be filed and painted like any other nail.

The full procedure, which requires several rounds of remodeling, application, curing, and sealing only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish, and the results last 6-8 weeks on average before you need another application.

In short, it's the reason you don't have to keep hiding your toes this summer. You can walk out with great-looking toenails today.

Clear Nails for the Long Term: Medical Treatments

As we said, KeryFlex is purely an aesthetic treatment. It has no effect on the fungi growing underneath the nail.

In other words, that means that without medical treatments your body will keep growing diseased and damaged nail tissue, and you'd have to keep getting KeryFlex treatments every few months indefinitely to maintain healthy looking nails.

The most common and effective medical treatment for fungal nails is oral antifungal medications. As we said above, a typical treatment course lasts about 6 to 12 weeks, taking a pill every day.

Most people handle these treatments very well, although some people can develop side effects including rashes, digestive issues, and even liver damage. We'll help you determine if oral antifungals are safe for you, and maybe bring you back for a few follow-up appointments just to be on the safe side.

Once the fungal infection has been completely eradicated, you'll start growing out healthy nail, rather than nail that becomes damaged almost immediately. Eventually, your need for KeryFlex treatments will end, and you'll have your own beautiful nail back.

That said, you'll have to keep in mind that an infection can always return. Once the infection has been cleared, keep it from coming back by:

Washing your feet every day

Rotating shoes every day, and applying antifungal powders or sprays at night so that they remain "hostile territory" for fungi.

Always protecting your feet in public places—such as wearing sandals or shower shoes when you're at the gym or the pool.

Stop Hiding Your Nails!

Don't let your toenails keep embarrassing you all the way through another Texas summer. When you develop that inflammation, you may experience a range of symptoms, including stiffness and dull pain in the back of your calf, in the areas surrounding your tendon. The pain can also extend to your heel and along the entire length of your tendon. Often a progressive condition, symptoms tend to get worse with movement or exercise. If not treated or rested, a serious case of Achilles tendinitis can result in an Achilles tendon rupture. For that reason, it's important to treat your pain as soon as you notice a problem.

But why should you choose MLS Laser Therapy for this cause of heel pain? In this case, the inflamed tendon is the plantar fascia, running along the bottom of your foot to your heel. Every time you walk, run or exercise, that tendon gets stressed out. Then, if your muscles remain tight, they can tug on the plantar fascia, causing heel and arch pain, inflammation, or even small tears to the tendon.

In our office, plantar fasciitis is one of the leading causes of heel pain. To relieve the discomfort, patients can practice stretching exercises. A a pair of custom orthotics can help relieve plantar fasciitis and prevent it from returning, by removing stress from your overworked tendon.

Now, all of those treatment options are very effective at relieving heel pain. However, they take time and consistency if patients want to see results. And so, for that reason, many patients choose to speed up their heeling process with the addition of laser therapy sessions.

If you choose to treat plantar fasciitis with MLS Laser Therapy, you can expect to:

Speed up the metabolism in your cells, leading to faster repair in your damaged tendon.

Reduce inflammation in your plantar fascia.

Quickly reduce heel pain.

Reduce the time it takes to make a full recovery.

Help your body complete tissue repair with strong cells that are more resilient.

Who is a Candidate for Laser Treatments in DeSoto?

Because the MLS Laser is safe, consistent and effective for pain relief and inflammation reduction, most patients can benefit from this treatment modality. Best of all, while you will typically require between 6 and 12 treatment sessions to fully relieve heel pain and repair any underlying damage, most patients notice results after the first treatment.

Ready to find lasting relief from heel pain without injections? Here are a few factors that could impact the growth pattern of your nail bed.
1. The way you cut your nails

When it's time for a trim, cut straight across the nail, making sure to leave a bit of visible white growth. Also, avoid following the curve of the nail bed and moving into the corners. Why? Go too low or too curved on your clip, and you could cause trauma to the nail, increasing the risk of ingrowth. Already have ingrown nails? Don't try to fix the problem at home: you'll end up in pain, and you're more likely to sustain an infection.

2. Previous injuries.

Any form of toenail trauma, from a stub to a dropped item on the nail, can change the way your nail grows. How could that be? An injury can push your nail down into your skin. If that happens, you may develop a painful, inflamed or infected ingrown toenail.

3. The biomechanics of your foot.

This term describes the way your muscles, tendons and ligaments interact as you move. In some cases, your biomechanics increase the risk for ingrown toenails. That's the case if your gait involves rolling off the edge of your big toe, because the pressure of that motion can cause the sharp edge of your nail to push into the delicate skin of the nail bed, leading to ingrowth.

Ingrown Toenail Symptoms

When you have an ingrown nail, you'll likely notice that the nail is cutting into the skin of your nail bed. You can also apply antibiotic ointments to the toe, wearing shoes that give your toes lots of space when you walk. Some patients can also find relief from over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications.
If your discomfort improves in a few days, then you're in great shape. But if you still show signs of an ingrown toenail at that point, it's time to make an appointment with Dr. Lisa Brandy.

Once you come into the office, we can treat ingrown toenails in several different ways. If you already have an infection, or if you've already had several ingrown toenails, surgery may be your best option. But, unlike other surgical procedures, when we perform an ingrown toenail surgery, we can provide treatment using local anesthetic for a quick and comfortable procedure.

However, if those ingrown toenails keep coming back, you may need a more permanent solution. In such cases, medications that cauterize the nail matrix cells may provide a longer-lasting solution. Afterward, ingrowth should never again be a problem.

But what if trauma is the cause of your ingrown nail? In that case, your entire nail plate may need to be removed. (This may also be your best treatment option if your nail is very thick or painful. Before such a procedure, we'll still numb the toe using an injection of local anesthesia. Next, we'll remove the nail. But this procedure is only recommended when you're dealing with chronic, painful ingrown toenails.)

Would you prefer to avoid surgery—and the pain of an ingrown toenail? Make conscious shoe choices. Steer clear of shoes that are too small, too long or too tight. Any of these fit problems can cause pressure and trauma to the nails that can change the direction of your nail's growth.

2. Follow the rules of nail trimming, cutting straight across, leaving white nail edges visible above the bed, and creating a buffer zone around the nail corners.

3. Always protect those toenails. Whether you're at home, at work, or on the beach, cover up your feet and nails with supportive footwear. And, as a conservative option, these inserts are a great way to address many different foot and ankle conditions. When it comes to orthotics or insoles, which do you need to get lasting pain relief? Read on to learn more about orthotics vs insoles.

What are Insoles?

Insole is a broad term used to describe any product inserted into shoes. You can buy them without prescriptions at supermarkets, drug stores, and even online. Shoe inserts like these are padded, so they can offer shock absorption for runners. They're especially effective for people who like to train in minimalist sneakers.

Do you love ballet flats? Insoles could also make these shoes a bit more comfortable because they do provide a bit of arch support. Basically, insoles give a little bit of padding and support to average people who just want a bit more comfort. But remember—you can't customize insoles to meet your specific foot needs. They're designed to fit a range of shoe sizes, but that's about all the customization you can do, however, they won't address any of your biomechanical challenges. And they won't treat or relieve conditions such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. Can these insoles treat any causes of foot or heel pain?
While it's true that these scanners know the shape of your foot, so the insoles they deliver are a bit more customized, they don't take into account your entire foot structure. Or your walking gait. The result? Scanned insoles offer more support than an over-the-counter insole. But they are still less supportive than a custom orthotic.

In spite of this fact, they're more costly than drugstore shoe inserts. So, before purchasing a scanned insole, it's important to consult with Dr. Lisa Brandy, to see if this shoe insert can adequately address your foot pain. Otherwise, you'll spend more money than you need to, without finding the relief that you seek.

If you hope to address biomechanical concerns and prevent injuries, the only inserts that will work are custom orthotics. In fact, in a recent study from Australia, we learned that custom orthotics can prevent running and sporting injuries. At the same time, the study confirms that scanned or drugstore insoles aren't up to this important task. In fact, they might increase your risk for injury.

How could that be? It's simple. Over the counter insoles do pad your feet. As a result, it might take you longer to feel foot pain than if you weren't wearing inserts. And, because of that delay, your feet could be exposed to damaging external pressures for longer than they would if you didn't wear insoles.

Orthotic Insoles: Choosing Treatment, not Comfort

If you just need a bit of padding in your thin-soled shoes, go ahead and add some insoles to your checkout cart—and your sneakers. But if you're dealing with chronic heel or foot pain, or you're an athlete or runner, custom orthotics are your best investment. Why is that the case? Remember: insoles can't treat foot or ankle conditions. But custom orthotic devices can relieve or even prevent the conditions highlighted below.

Shin Splints

This overuse injury is characterized by pain in the front lower section of your leg. It usually is worst when you run but improves with rest. If you already have shin splints, you'll need to briefly halt training so your body can heal. Then, once you're ready to resume runs, train with a custom orthotic in your shoe. Since these medical devices are constructed to compensate for your specific foot concerns, they can optimize your runs; put less strain on your muscles; and help prevent a return of those painful shin splints.

Bone Spurs

These areas of abnormal bone growth develop because of external pressure on your feet or heels. If they form on your heel bone, they're called heel spurs. Typically, pressure from your Achilles tendon or plantar fascia leads to heel spurs. So, if you take pressure off your tendons and ligaments with custom orthotics, you may be able to prevent heel spurs from developing. Or, if you already have a bone spur, your orthotics could keep them from growing larger.

Plantar Fasciitis

Custom orthotics can relieve the heel pain of plantar fasciitis. (which is inflammation in your plantar fascia, the tendon that runs along the bottom of your foot, between the heel and toes.) Because inflammation usually sets in due to external pressure, custom orthotics can reduce pressure by supporting your arches and the rest of your feet.

Orthotic Insoles for Tendonitis

As with plantar fasciitis, custom orthotics can relieve and even prevent Achilles tendinitis. Whether your tendinitis is the result of flat feet or a new, intense workout routine, getting fitted for custom orthotics can reduce stress on your Achilles tendon and prevent inflammation from setting in.

Custom Orthotic Insoles

Do you want to relieve your chronic foot and heel pain?
